Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study is to analyze the audiometric characteristics in sensorineural hearing loss which is related with financial compensation.

Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was done by review of 36 cases of coal miners with sensorineural hearing loss. The results of repeated pure tone audiometry (PTA), speech audiometry (SA), auditory brainstem response (ABR) were compared.

Results: All patients were men and average age was 53.5(47-63). The mean duration of service was 22.3(3-40) years. Of 36 patients, 9 patients(25%) showed test-retest differences in pure tone averages (PTA¡¯s) over 10 dB (average 14.4 dB between 1st and 3rd PTA¡¯s), which was considered as arbitrary thresholds. The degree of exaggeration was not significantly different according to the frequencies. They also showed higher PTA¡¯s than speech reception thresholds (average 10.7 dB between 1st PTA¡¯s and SRT). Average difference between PTA¡¯s and ABR thresholds was 18 dB.

Conclusions: The degree of sensorineural hearing loss could be occasionally exaggerated, especially which is related with financial compensation. This phenomenon is significantly appeared in 1st PTA rather than next PTAs, and in 1st PTA rather than 1st SA.
